I would buy this product again and again(01/07/2010)
I purchased this product because of hearing good things about it many years ago, and honestly I thought I was throwing my money away on a gimmick. I even thought well the thing probably won't even fit in the cleaning kit well much yet letting the Buttstock trap door close up behind this molded chunk of lead! Well I got this 3lb 11oz molded thing in from UPS so I thought well its here, may as well investigate it. To my surprise this molded trap door weight looked like a very good lead mold, but would it fit? I removed the cleaning kit and slid the weight right in place, it fit perfectly! The end where it would make contact with the trapdoor is a glued on piece of soft foam. There are 3 things this product did for my Colt Match H-Bar, 1.)It made the firearm 3lb 11oz heavier. 2.)It made the firearm more balanced. 3.)Oh and it tightened up my three shot groups by slightly more than .25 of an inch at a hundred yards! The darn thing tightened up my groups! And it fit the Buttstock like a glove! I mean there is just enough room for this weight to fit and the soft foam cussions it against the trap door when it's closed. The only drawback to this is it commits the firearm to strictly a prone/benched Match rifle. That didn't bother me because that's what the heavy rifle was designed for in the first place! I use a Harris 1A2 Bipod for the front and I sandbag the rifle at the rear of this Colt H-Bar Match rifle. My scope is a leopold 4.5 X 14 There is hardly a bit of felt recoil to this "HEAVY" rifle now. I use Winchester 45 GR Factory ammo. I wonder how my groups would be if I did reloads for it? Oh I almost forgot, the twist is 1 x 7" chrome lined barrel, the groups are about an honest 1" three shot groups at 100 yds. I am amazed at what this Buttstock weight has done for my groups! I am very happy I bought this well made product! And I think it is a good price for the tighter groups! It's definately a heavy slug now though. My advice is if you have a Heavy barrel Match A-2 firearm and want to shave a minimum of .25" off your 100 yard groups, get one of these balancing lead weights, it really works! You'll see...
AR-15 A2 Heavy Barrel Match Rifle(01/07/2010)
The AR-15 Heavy Barrel "Buttstock Weight" fits my Green Lable AR-15 Heavy Barrel Buttstock cleaning Kit storage Trap Door compartment like a glove! There is just enough room to shut the Trap Door and latch it! I emediately noticed that the rifle was close to being a balanced rifle now. The rifle has always been a prone shooter, but very muzzle heavy and difficult to handle. But now more than ever, it is certainly a prone shooter for sure now. The extra 3+ weight gain of the rifle is very noticable, but it is much closer to being a balanced target shooter. I definately have better/tighter three shot groups benched and sandbagged! The rifle recoil is practically not noticeable at all with the extra weightgain to the extreme rear of the rifle. I am very happy with my purchase. Now the bad news, as I mentioned it is most definately a prone shooter, only a weight lifter could stand and get reasonable groups, I mean it's very heavy! I don't mind I use a Harris 1A2 Bipod in front and sandbag the rear. "It is very stable now!" And as I mentioned I have about a 1 and a quarter inch group now using this "Buttstock Weight" and that is at 100 yards. Sometimes my groups are tighter but never larger than the 1.25" groupings. I'm using Winchester 223 45 GRain JHP rounds 3600 fps ammo. Anyway I've tightened my groups an honest .25" or slightly better, and I think that's worth the investment considering I havent found the rifles best shooting ammo yet. Who knows maybe I can get it down to 1" groups! At a hundred yards I'd be very happy with that! An honest note: "If you don't want to shoot prone don't buy this product."
Works Great with some modifications.(12/01/2014)
While the weight did not fit in my UTG A2 stock easy I still have to give it 5 stars because the mods needed to get it to fit were easy and IMO this is the best possible way to add weight to the stock and balance a ar15 meant for accuracy.
I have a White Oak service upper on a Seekins billet lower and the UTG A2 stock. This weight only dropped into the UTG stock about 90%. Some moderate force with hand got it about 5% more deep and a little hard tapping got it another 1% maybe. But not enough to close trap door even with the end foam piece completely removed. Thankfully the strong foam lined UTG stock kept me from driving it in so tight that I couldn't get the weight back out. The fix after removing it was to cut both ends as only cutting the tapered end would do nothing to get it any deeper into the stock as the large end was preventing the weight from going down any further. I only cut an inch of tampered end to reduce more weight as even my service upper is not heavy enough to need the complete weight of this item. I then cut about 3/4" off the large end as that's the distance I needed to fit weight in far enough to shut trap door with half of the foam piece reattached. Perfect fit, absolutely no movement being I properly measured both distance and weight I needed to both close trap door and balance rifle. I shoot competition service and match so I needed a solid one piece weight that worked. I use to use some .50AE bullets and foam to get them tight in the trap door compartment but this weight just makes it more complete and solid.
I plan to buy at least one more for my old service rifle as these are the only two ar's I own that use A2 stocks. May grab a few more to have different weights for different shooting events.
Great product...(13/03/2014)
Put this into a A2 rifle stock, Les Baer, and it fit perfectly. Was a little tight but I slid the stock off and tapped the small end of the stock on the table a couple of times and the lead slid in for a very good fit. This adds over 3lbs of weight to the stock and balances out the weight of the heavy barrel. Makes it very easy to hold the rifle steady in the off hand position. Great product.
Snug fit(27/07/2015)
nice item.. It was a very snug fit in the stock of my Rock River....but only took a few hits with a ball peen hammer to get it to fit...it is NOT coming out.......it added enough weight to the rear of the rifle that it feels balanced to shoot it offhand...HOWEVER I would not want to carry it all over the place....makes the rifle heavy...that is ok...I have some Lightweight Colts and a Carbon Fiber Windham if I want to carry it around.
Not A Drop In(01/05/2017)
I ordered this for my 6.5 Grendel AR. It is used exclusively for target shooting from a table. It is equipped with a UTG A2 stock. The weight required extensive material removed to fit the stock. Plan to take an hour or longer to make it fit.
Does what I wanted it to(15/09/2017)
About as simple a product as you'll likely find; a hunk of lead with a foam pad glued to the end. Mine fit the A2 stock compartment with no trimming required and just a light tap to seat it in. Tap the butt upside down on a hard surface and it comes right out (be careful not to break the door off). I used this to balance a RRA CMP upper with 20 inch heavy barrel which was quite front heavy with the empty stock. Gradually sawed an inch or so at a time off the narrow end until I found the right balance. I ended up needing only about a 1 1/4 inches of the weight. Fits in there snugly and doesn't slide around. Yes, you'll probably have to cut down to the size you need, but no big deal. Just wear latex gloves, be careful with the residue and dispose of properly - this is lead after all. Only con I can think of is that this is a $28 chunk of lead, most of which I now have leftover. Maybe I'll take up bullet casting.
The good and the not so good(05/07/2018)
The good - balances the 20 inch barrel rifle at the magazine well.
The not so good - requires some grinding to get it to fit completely in and not be wedged so tightly that it would be impossible to remove.
