Good Idea(26/02/2010)
Handy little things. Helps to have them for function testing without worrying about banging up the internals of a M-16/AR-15 during dry fire. They are also used with various other Magpul products to help install things like rails and stocks like the ACS. Only bad thing is they are all polymer with no spring in the center of the cartridge like a snap cap.
Incredibly dissapointing...(26/03/2010)
Got these with the intention of performing function tests and doing some at home training on days that I couldn't make it to the range. However, not long after I tried cycling a few of these through my weapon (using my trusty P-mags) it became abundantly clear that these rounds neither wanted to go into battery, or once they got there, they really didn't want to extract. It took SIGNIFICANT force on the charging handle to pull back the bolt using any and all of these rounds. Thinking there might be something wrong with my weapon I immediately packed up and went to the range in order to test it using live ammunition. As always, the weapon functioned properly and ran without a hiccup with no anomalies to report. Tried using these rounds again, and again, a no go. As cheap as they are I can still say they are a waste of money for those with anything other than the loosest of tolerances.
needed slight modification to the 'case'(16/07/2010)
like member 'sonic boom', these rounds also were difficult to chamber, and difficult to extract. I determined that the issue was that the case rim depth on these rounds is a bit too thick. I reduced the thickness by running the base of the rounds on some find grit sand paper, and they cycle perfectly now.
other than the bit of tolerance mismatch, they are very nice, and a few minutes spent modifying them and they work perfectly.
Perfect for training indoors(10/04/2011)
They chambered perfect for me. I use them to practice double feeds and reloads. I don't like the sound of sending the bolt home with an empty chamber.
Tip: Don't use them outside in grassy areas. They will be lost.
MagPul 223 Dummy Rounds(03/06/2011)
I was looking for quality dummy rounds for safe dry fire practice and malfunction clearing drills. These fit the bill. Very sturdy construction and appears to be one piece construction that has good weight that feels like a live round. Loads and extracts like live rounds from two different mag manufacturers. Price is very good so I bought four sets for a full 20rnd mag in practice and for tactical and speed reloading drills with multiple magazines. Good stuff!
These are total junk(07/09/2011)
I custom build AR-15's for my customers. I ordered some of these to test feed. They are garbage, they don't feed, they jam in 3 different mags.
Great Problem Solver(20/12/2011)
I bought these to use for 'blind' malfunction drills, hiding them randomly in magazines to force FTF events during practice. They worked flawlessly, feeding and ejecting cleanly. As I was using them I noticed (extreme)difficulty extracting with my reloads, not the dummy rounds. My die had crept during loading, all my rounds were +/-0.002 over max headspace. The dummy rounds gauge perfectly. And, yes, they instantly disappear in the grass. Paint them orange or bring your kids to find them.
Handy to have around(07/05/2012)
I bought these for dry firing and for practicing failure drills (mix a few of these with your regular ammo). No problem feeding from PMAG:s or G-MAG:s (haven't tried them in metal mags yet).
My one complaint is the color - maybe black dummies work well in a desert environment, but in grass they will disappear "quite" quickly.
Hopefully Brownells will start carrying the brick-colored Magpul dummies as well - I ended up buying a 12-pack of those after my first range session with the black ones. The color is the only reason this product does not get a 5-star rating from me.
Just ok(24/11/2014)
The armor at my work uses them so I thought I would give them a try. They are ok. They are great for checking the ejection on my rifles, but some of the ones I got had pretty large nicks and deep scratches in them. A couple of them get hung up when ejecting from my gun too.
Overall they are a good tool for checking the functionality of the gun, and they are pretty cheap. Can't complain much.
not so great(14/09/2016)
not bashing Magpul but this is one product from them I would not buy...Bought these to do a functionality test on my rifle. Come to find out because they are plastic, they kept getting jammed into my barrel and they get bound up pretty easy. I would say its due to the material being to soft, these AR15 BCG slam home the next round pretty hard they already have big knicks and gashes in them already and I only used them once, this may cause more problems down the road....you may want to look into something with a better quality.
