Improves Bolt Release & Lock-Up
Precision-machined and hardened, steel bolt stops help ensure consistent bolt release and lockup, and offer increased service life over the factory part. Extended model features a large, easy-to-find, serrated pad to help reduce the time it takes to get the bolt back into battery after a magazine change, and is standard issue on many U.S. Military MK14 Mod O and M-14SE rifles. Standard version offers the same reliability, but maintains the snag-free, low-profile contour of the factory part. Both models have a low maintenance, Parkerized finish to resist corrosion.

Great Addition(29/01/2010)
Works just like an AR-15 bolt release. Do not use the factory pin on your rifle, I tried to and it's a hair to big. The bolt stop didn't move freely with the factory pin and the spring wasn't strong enough to return the bolt stop if you pulled the charging handle back. Use the pin supplied with the part from brownells it works flawlessly.
works well, incredible hassle to install(18/04/2010)
I would give this product 5 stars if it weren't so expensive for what it is.
It's a major pain in the butt to install, but that's the fault of the M14/M1A design, not the catch's. Removing the roll pin that holds the factory catch is phenomenally difficult to accomplish without marring the receiver. I punched the pin out as far as I could then used
Once installed it works great and is one of those must-have upgrades for any serious M14/M1A shooter.
Great to drop a mag with wet gloves on(23/06/2010)
Smith Ent. who makes this piece developed it on request by Special Forces I believe. This is a great invention for dropping mags when you are using shooting gloves or wet gloves such as neoprene or dive gloves. There is another one out there by Sadlak I have not tried that looks like it gives even better access. It is on my order this month. These bolt stops are a simple must have change out part. Like everything else Smith Ent. builds, they are high quality. This is a great first enhancement for your M14 if you are just getting started tinkering with your weapon.
Best thing since sliced bread!(11/03/2011)
Works like a charm, it looks great and would get one for my next M1A.
Like the others said installation can be a pain, and make sure the pin you use will fit right otherwise you may have operation issues. Only other con is if you lock the bolt to the rear and if you lay the rifle down on the left side, the bolt will release. Could be a pain at the firing range.
Great Part!(08/04/2011)
The SA factory pin is a few thousandths less in diameter than the pin shipped with the part, so don't attempt to re-use the factory pin. With the proper punches, this is not a difficult retrofit. Results are tremendous, which fits the price! Most impressive is the match of the retro part to the original finish. Kudos to Smith. [...] I would recommend to the unskilled to examine the factory part on dis-assembly, and hone the evident wear marks before installation.
Loving the new BOLT STOP!!!(10/09/2011)
Just installed this on my SOCOM 16 and love it! As soon as I first got my rifle I thought the bolt catch should've been bigger. This makes it a lot easier to operate the bolt stop. You don't have to search for it with your finger like on the old one! The only bad thing I can say about this is the installation process. You better have a long skinny and tough punch to get that pin out!
Well Designed Part(19/11/2011)
Smith Enterprise did a great job designing this part because it fits exactly under the Generation II receiver-mounted Springfield 6x20 mil-dot scope. It fits perfectly in the opening under the cut-out under the scope mount. Yes, it might be difficult removing the roll pin from the OEM bolt stop, but if one takes the time it comes out just fine. To avoid marring the receiver surface while removing he pin, I found it very helpful to use two or three layers of masking tape over all the surfaces that may be contacted by the tools used to remove the pin. A very small diameter drill bit driven in from the front end of the roll pin hole worked well to assist in removing the pin. I used a brass dowell to drive the pin flush as the final step in the installation. No marring of hte receiver resulted because of the use of a brass dowell and covering vulnerable surfaces with masking tape on the receiver prevented any scuffs when the pin is being removed or re-inserted. I had no problem using the OEM roll pin (the one removed) rather than the new one that came with the part. All this really worked well for me!!!
Works great(22/12/2011)
Nicely made and works great, insert a mag and close the bolt just like an AR with your thumb. I little expensive for such a small thing.
Fitting required for metric clones(15/07/2012)
Well made product but not designed for polytech clones. It will work but the hole needs to be oversized slightly to allow solid fit and function with factory pin. The supplied pin is to small to fit snug in the receiver.
Great addtion to any M14/M1A rifle(27/08/2012)
Allows quick closing of the bolt with left hand. Installation is difficult, I broke 3 punches and 2 drill bits just to get the stock pin out. Make sure to use lots of masking tape to protect the receiver. Finish blends in with my Springfield Bush Rifle very well, cost is a little high for this little piece of invention.
GREAT ADDITION TO MY RIFLE(27/11/2012)
This thing is a bit tricky to install but well worth the effort. It will speed up your reloads and if you have any experience with an AR-15/M4 it will feel familiar.
It is a great product(09/10/2013)
This little product took me about 15 minutes to put on my Great Battle Rifle!! Used a little tape and tapped out the roll pin and replaced the OEM part with this great little part!! Makes the Battle Rifle that much meaner and leaner!! One thing, make sure your spring is snapped into the bolt stop when you put it on. If not it could wiggle loose.
Expensive but works great.(25/10/2014)
Yeah, its pricey for a small hunk of metal but it works as described. But anything firearm related is expensive, that's just the way it is. I found installation was very easy. After taping up both sides of the receiver I used a 1/16th punch and that only got me an 1/8th of an inch movement before the punch jammed in the receiver.
I then removed the punch and got a 1/16th Allen wrench that is 4 inches long and cut off the short bent end. Now you have a flexible 4 inch long "punch" that can push out the roll pin out very easily. Small taps on a hammer and within 2 minutes the pin had moved just enough to remove the old stop and insert the new one. Easy as that. The Allen wrench set cost me 4 bucks at Lowes so its no great loss of that wrench size.
I reused the original roll pin as it was already in the receiver hole and pushed it back in to mate with the 2 receiver holes. Of course the spring was inserted in the spring pockets before tapping the roll pin back in.
Push the roll pin towards the rear to remove the old pin and towards the muzzle end and follow these tips and the install will be easy.
Back into battery fast(20/03/2015)
Works as advertised, great at sending the bolt home after a mag change while on the move. Downside is the price and that I had more than a little trouble getting it installed, though I'm not a gunsmith. Other than that I would buy it again.
Definite Improvement and ease of use (26/03/2015)
This among the magazine release was of my recent changes and it is well worth it. Ensure you use a 1/16" punch to remove the pin and do so gently. I was able to use the same roll pin and not have to change it by being gentle. Also, I did not take the roll pin all the way out. I moved it enough to release the bolt stop, cleaned the area and spring, then added the new bolt stop and drifted the roll pin back into place. This roll pin, among others, is easily damaged. For me, I had to remove my scope mount prior to installation. I thought it would be possible to do it but was not. This roll pin is under a lot of tension from the receiver. This was completed upon a Springfield M1A Loaded model with all GI parts and an older rifle so it was still made to GI spec.
This product definitely gives an advantage to the stock bolt stop. While it appears a lot larger than the stock part, it does not protrude to snag on things but offers a much more positive engagement surface. Definitely recommend for all M1As no matter their purpose along with the magazine release from Sadlak.
Worth it (03/03/2016)
Great addition. Easier to find in a rush, or when wearing gloves.
Should be standard (30/11/2016)
Installation was tricky. Ordered a small brass punch and gunsmith hammer before attempting to replace the punch pin from the original bolt lock. Couldn't get the punch pin out far enough and then had to cut it with a dremel cutoff wheel while preventing any damage to the rifle.
Function, and aesthetics are perfect.
Works amazing !!!
Worth Every Penny(20/02/2017)
Easy to install with the right tool.
(you will want the appropriately sized punch otherwise a smaller punch will wedge itself into the roll pin versus actually knocking it out. You will also want to use a LONG punch OR a cheap one, like harbour freight)
Hold the bolt open just fine. Similar to AR/M16/M4 platform bolt release. Just squish the paddle and you are ready!!!
Solid construction and heavy duty!!!
Great Tactical and Practical addition(21/08/2017)
Pros: Friggen bolt hold open capability on a great rifle which just needed a slight tactical/modern edge. Works great when operating from prone from and a bipod. No need to shift the entire body and reach out for the big long pull of the charging handle again. Makes mag reloads quicker and easier while remaining focused on your target. You can also cant the rifle counter clockwise and reach under with your right index finger to drop the bolt, not the best but it works if you are in an odd position or super tight quarters.
All in all adds a great tactical edge re-leaving the need to manually cycle the bolt after reloads. "I'll take 'an extra fraction of a second for $61 Alex.'"
Cons: Needs an additional protruding "button" on the bottom to make bolt hold opens easier. Especially for rifles with Scope Mounts on them. Have to do a little wrangling and almost pull the top part out to get it to catch. Could be much easier if part resembled the AR15 platform's advanced bolt catch devices.
Annoying to install with the wrong punches! Make sure to order yourself the appropriate brass punch NOW. Do not wait or think the kit from Harbour Freight or craftsman punches will cut the mustard. Trust me on this, I know we all want to save some $$$. My gunsmith(ing) skills are decently advanced and I had issues myself due to this. Just get the right tool if you do not already have one. You will need an elongated punch in the right size. Sorry, I forget which one it is but Brownells should be able to assist with this.
